A Scanner Darkly is a 2006 American animated sciencefiction thriller film directed by Richard Linklater, based on the novel of the same name by Philip K. Dick. The film tells the story of identity and deception in a nearfuture dystopia constantly under intrusive hightech police surveillance in the midst of a drug addiction epidemic. The film was shot digitally and then animated using My Name is Bharat Krishna Swaminathan but my friends call me Barry.

Philip Kindred Dick ( ) was an awardwinning science fiction writer, and author of the novel A Scanner Darkly which this movie is directly based upon. The quirky animation and slow plot are probably why A Scanner Darkly isn't more widely known. It isn't like other modern scifi in that it isn't aimed at the Friday night popcorn audience.
